Rational intransitive preferences

چکیده
According to a widely held view, rationality demands that the preferences of person be transitive. The transitivity assumption is an axiom in standard theories rational choice. It also prima facie very plausible. I argue here not necessary condition rationality; it constraint only some cases. argument presented based on non-linearity differential utility functions. This paper has four parts. First, present against (I, II). Second, discuss objections; this will bring out features view defended here, like essentially comparative nature choice (III). Then, certain proposals promise avoid my conclusion (IV). Finally, go into implications concerning decision making (V). To accept intransitivities as does make our life easier; can even lead hard choices. However, skepticism about

Neural Signatures of Intransitive Preferences
It is often assumed that decisions are made by rank-ordering and thus comparing the available choice options based on their subjective values. Rank-ordering requires that the alternatives' subjective values are mentally represented at least on an ordinal scale. Because one alternative cannot be at the same time better and worse than another alternative, choices should satisfy transitivity (if a...
متن کاملApproval Voting with Intransitive Preferences
We extend Approval voting to the settings where voters may have intransitive preferences. The major obstacle to applying Approval voting in these settings is that voters are not able to clearly determine who they should approve or disapprove, due to the intransitivity of their preferences. An approach to address this issue is to apply tournament solutions to help voters make the decision. We st...
متن کاملA Model for Intransitive Preferences
It is known that humans form non-transitive preferences. We propose to model human preferences as a complete weighted directed graph where nodes are objects of preference, and an edge leading from one node to another has weight equal to the probability that the destination node will be preferred (or chosen) from the pair connected by the edge. We also propose that the most preferred object(s) m...
متن کاملCommentary: “Neural signatures of intransitive preferences”
Kalenscher et al. (2010) explored the neural signatures of intransitive preferences. This endeavor is of great interest because transitivity of preferences has long been considered a key feature of rationality. The success of this approach hinges upon appropriate methods for identifying decision makers with intransitive preferences. The authors invented a descriptive numerical “index of intrans...
متن کاملQUANTUM RATIONAL PREFERENCES AND DESIRABILITY Quantum rational preferences and desirability
We develop a theory of quantum rational decision making in the tradition of Anscombe and Aumann’s axiomatisation of preferences on horse lotteries. It is essentially the Bayesian decision theory generalised to the space of Hermitian matrices. Among other things, this leads us to give a representation theorem showing that quantum complete rational preferences are obtained by means of expected ut...
